Risk over dry stream plan By Gabrielle Stuart and Andrew King A POTENTIAL solution to drying streams in the north-west has been found, but it comes with a risk: The flow-on effects could dry other streams. Both the Waimairi and Wai-iti streams have dried out and, in March, more than 40 residents signed a petition asking the city council to do something about it. Several options for feeding the streams were put forward in a report put to the Fendalton-

Waimairi Community Board yesterday, which included creating a new bore or diverting water from existing ones. The cost of a new bore was estimated a between $250,000 and $350,000, and diverting water from an existing bore in Burnside Park has been estimated to cost $125,000. But the report also warned the potential solution could come at a cost. “Augmentation of one stream may have negative effects on other streams, by diverting shallow groundwater which would

otherwise go to another stream,” the report said. Community board deputy chairman David Cartwright was concerned the board did not have enough information about the potential effects of the bores. “I’m certainly wanting to maintain streams as they are part of Christchurch’s heritage, but not if it is at the detriment of the greater Christchurch ecology or aquifers,” he said. He wanted to see more information about the flow-on effects, how the water levels would be

monitored and if a new bore could be shut off, before a final decision was made. He was also concerned about the wider problem of dropping aquifer levels, and whether more streams would dry in the future. Money spent on the bores could reduce the budget for other water programmes supporting the greater aquifer system. Climate change, a drier than average winter and more urbanisation preventing water seeping back into the ground are the main reasons there have been

low water levels, according to the report. THE NEW local body election wards have thrown up a few interesting issues. One of the most intriguing is that there are many candidates not opting to go for the ward they live in (page 5). Waimairi Ward, for example, is guaranteed not to have a city councillor who lives in the area, while Harewood has candidates from Cashmere vying for the table. Though it is not a legal requirement, it seems like strategy is playing a heavy part in this. In my humble opinion, there is nothing like being at the grass roots of a community to truly know the issues and heart of the area. Current city councillor Jamie Gough takes a shot at the new wards in his opinion piece this week (page 4). Postal election ballots are delivered to mailboxes from Friday – choose wisely. Major sporting hub plan

By Andrew King THE ELMWOOD Club is looking to undertake a major expansion of its facilities by building on a nearby school. The Ministry of Education and the club have a verbal contract allowing the club to build a “major sporting hub” on land that belongs to Heaton Normal Intermediate on Heaton St. The club is made up of seven different sporting clubs, including Lincoln University Rugby Football Club, St Nicholas Netball Club, Elmwood Bowling Club, Elmwood Croquet Club, Old Boys Collegians Cricket Club, High School Old Boys’ Burnside Hockey, High School Old Boys’ Football Club and the Shirley Volleyball Club. It currently has a bowling green, beach volleyball courts and croquet facilities and also backs onto Elmwood Park which has grounds for cricket and football. A planner has been employed by the club to figure out what can be built, how much it will cost and how they will fund it. The idea is to include multiuse indoor courts, clubrooms, gym space and sports medicine facilities.

strong community focus,” she said. The seven clubs have 2600 members between them, and more than 75,000 people pass through the doors each year, Ms Hyde said. Club board member Lorraine McLeod said the key is to work with the surrounding community and schools to make the best possible facility. “Both Heaton and St Andrew’s will have prioritised use,” she said. “We are now at the stage that we need to replace our current buildings with something modern and usable . . . It will be the icing on the cake for those who use it,” she said. In Brief HOUSE FIRE A rubbish truck driver risked his life on Friday at about 6.30am when he spotted a house fire in Burnside. He broke the windows to alert anyone inside about the danger. Luckily noone was home at the time. However, a pet dog died in the blaze. Early indications suggest the fire started in the lounge and then gutted the house. Fire crews from Harewood fought the blaze for close to an hour. DEEPENING BORES The city council is set to speed up efforts to replace shallow bores, which provide drinking water to the north-west of Christchurch, with ones that are deeper. It’s a recommendation from the infrastructure, transport and environment committee. There are 22 bores in the north-west catchment, supplying about 80,000 people. The shallowest of these is 16m. The deep bores which provide water to other parts of the city reach depths of about 100m. The work is due to be completed in June 2018. ROADING DETOURS The intersection of Westminister St, Roosevelt St and Courtenay St in St Albans will be closed while an intersection upgrade is carried out. Motorists can use Cranford St, Innes Rd and Rutland St to detour around the work site.

Your Local Views Lone candidate not ideal City councillor Jamie Gough writes this week’s opinion piece on being the Lone Ranger of Fendalton and how the system may not encourage people to get involved with the city council. Being the Lone Ranger of Fendalton – due to an unopposed re-election to the city council – is a slightly odd feeling. I’m torn with emotion as my successful bid for a third term was obviously a goal for the year, however, I’m disappointed about what it says for democracy. The new representation model, which the city council adopted earlier this year, changed the way

our council is elected – the ward sizes were shrunk, so instead of multiple councillors elected over a wider area, it became a winner-take-all system with one councillor elected per small area. Further to this, more councillors were added in total. I cannot see how this achieves anything positive as it virtually ensures incumbents have a stranglehold on their small patch. Dare I say it, but I suspect this may have been exactly what some people wanted.

What it will mean for the working dynamics is also worrying; the system will incentivise councillors to loose sight of the bigger picture, which is the vital ingredient of good governance. I come from a private-enterprise background and don’t plan on being a councillor for life, so to be perfectly frank, having a cushy re-election road is of no interest to me. What I actually care about is having a system that encourages capable people to put their hand up, because having quality councillors around the table is what’s really important. This is exactly why I voted against the model we now have. Having the most conflicted people in the world – the councillors themselves – effectively driving the process which dictates their re-employment is a complete nonsense. Something needs to change and I plan on trying to have this self-serving model kicked for touch.

Wild weather havoc By Mark Thomas – Fire Risk Management Officer JUST WHEN we were getting used to warmer days and shorter nights on Wednesday we got reminded just how winter could have been with a polar blast sweeping through the city. While there was a bit of hail, a bit of wind and a lowering of temperature before 2pm it was from 4.35 pm on wards that everything went off for our fire crews. Between then and 2am the next morning we attended 37 incidents caused by the weather. It wasn’t a great night to be a tree with 18 of these being uprooted right across the city, interrupting power and blocking roads. There were also garden sheds, trampolines, a car port, some roofs and even a campervan near Akaroa blown over or away.

A wild night that included some impressive rain coming in sideways where I live. Hopefully, now we’ll cruise towards summer with no more winter blasts. In fact we’ll probably be moaning about nor’westers soon. Which means we need to be careful with anything, including barbecues, that might start fire. Friday a week ago saw fire in Bottle Lake Forest which is always a concern. Normally, we go to deliberately-lit fires started by idiots who seem to think it a good idea. However, this time a loader working at the landfill had a fuel hose burst and diesel poured over its electrics when then shorted out. The resulting fire was probably quite a shock to the driver. It was going well when St Albans crew arrived but was quickly extinguished.

Between Harewood, Waimairi, Papanui, Fendalton and Innes Wards there are 12 candidates looking for a spot around the city council table come October. Of those 12, only Brian Gargiulo and Aaron Keown (Harewood), John Stringer (Papanui), Jamie Gough (Fendalton), Pauline Cotter and Mel Rodricks (Innes), live in the wards they are standing in. Current city councillor Pauline Cotter and Mel Rodricks both live and will compete in the Innes Ward, Jamie Gough was re-elected after he ran unopposed in the Fendalton Ward and John Stringer will compete for a seat

Safety upgrade for pedestrian crossing By Andrew King AN UPGRADE of a pedestrian crossing in Bishopdale has been proposed to make it safer for pupils and other users. The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board asked city council staff to investigate the possibility of installing lights on a pedestrian crossing on Sawyers Arms Rd beside

Board member Faimeh Burke said they were aware of safety concerns for school pupils around that crossing. “There are a lot of cars and trucks that use that road, so it is important we make sure those who use it are as safe as possible,” she said. Pupils from Casebrook Intermediate, Cotswold

School and Bishopdale School use the crossing. Lady Burke said the cost is yet to be determined and public consultation will begin in November to find out what the community thinks. “Consultation will finish in November. The design will be completed by July 2017 and the project is expected to be completed in December 2017,” she said.

Spa pool reopened; cleared of bacteria By Andrew King TESTING FOR the dangerous legionella bacterium will be carried out every two weeks after an outbreak at Jellie Park Recreation and Sports Centre. The spa pool reopened last week after the latest testing proved negative for the bacterium. The Canterbury District Health Board confirmed the seven water samples taken from the spa on August 18 were negative for legionella bacterium, meaning it can reopen to the public. Legionella bacterium can cause legionellosis, including a pneumonia-type illness called legionnaires’

disease and a mild flu-like illness called Pontiac fever. The spa was closed on August 12 after initial testing revealed one of seven water samples tested positive for legionella bacterium. During its closure, staff thoroughly decontaminated the spa and carried out servicing and maintenance improvements, including the installation of new water jets. City council head of recreation and sports John Filsell said the spa was popular at Jellie Park so it was good to have it back in operation. “We have worked closely with the CDHB and our environmental officers to

develop additional testing processes going forward. Regular legionella bacterium testing will now be carried out at all city council spa pools and we have also implemented an additional fortnightly super-chlorination process,” he said. “Both these actions are above the required industry standards, but the safety of our users is our primary concern and these extra measures will help to ensure our water quality remains high.” HAVE YOUR SAY: Has the recent closure affected you? Rangi choir in good voice RANGI RURU Girls’ School’s senior choir Resolutions received a bronze award at the Big Sing national final in Dunedin recently. Students competed against choirs from across the country. School director of music Janet Kingsbury said it was a significant achievement for the group of 24 young singers and their director, Helen Charlton. “At the end of 2015, over half the choir left school, so this year Resolutions has been very much in a rebuilding phase. We are delighted to receive a bronze award,” she said. “There have been many long hours of preparation and the girls rose to the occasion magnificently and performed from the heart.” Big Sing concludes a busy period for the school’s music department following success for the jazz and chamber music groups earlier in the month. The accolade is awarded to an outstanding person who has received a Cochlear implantable hearing solution. Our People Community board leader retires When she first put her hand up to be part of a community board in 1995, Val Carter was a fresh-faced, concerned resident who felt intimidated by the whole process. Fast-forward 21 years and she is ending her tenure with the FendaltonWaimairi Community Board. Andrew King talks to her about life as an elected official Wow, 21 years as an elected official – has it flown by? It has certainly flown by. It is surprising how fast time flies, but I have enjoyed every minute of it. When you think about it in those terms, it seems long but it really has been a very enjoyable time of my life. It takes a long time to work out the processes and realise that the whole machinery of the city council works slowly. Describe the feeling you had when you first put your nomination in, what was going through your head? I think I was nervous because I didn’t know if I would be elected and it is a big thing to stand up and say I want to represent you.

It was new territory for me, as I had never done anything like that before. It was quite nerveracking to be working with very experienced elected people. It was quite intimidating. Who were the incumbents that you took on? I was part of the Citizens Team

back in those days. We were up against another full team. I can’t quite remember what it was called or who was in it, but we won and got in. It was a time where the competition meant there was more robust campaigning, which meant there were great options for the com-

munity to make a choice that would benefit them. What was the community board like in the early days? There were four councillors and about five members. They have not changed a lot. They still have the same purpose now as they did back then. Giving the

community a voice. Did you have many clashes over the years? Not really. When you are standing as a team, you work as a team. Things have changed over the years. It has never been cutthroat like national politics, it has always been polite. The thing is once you are elected onto the board you work together. Our board has always been harmonious. When did you became chairwoman? I was nominated chairwoman in 2007, and have been there for the last three terms. You must have seen a few mayors come and go, what has been your impression of them? They have all been different. Vicki Buck was a wonderful, optimistic, people person, and so was Garry Moore. He was a steady hand and kept things moving while looking after the ship very well. Bob Parker was the best speaker to the public, with strong media skills. He had a very tough task because of the earthquakes, but I think he did a fantastic job. Lianne Dalziel has steadied the ship after the earthquakes quite nicely.

after 20 plus years in politics She is very good at organising people and policy and shows genuine concern with everything. She is very precise with detail. Have we had a bad mayor in your opinion? I can’t say we have had a bad mayor, sometimes I don’t agree on policies but that is the game. What was it like to be an elected official during the earthquakes? It was very difficult for us because the elected members weren’t part of civil defence and felt slightly pushed to one side. There was a lot of stress out there. Our ward didn’t have the same immediate issues as those out east and by the coast. We had pockets that were badly affected; we had a lady break her back when she was hit by a falling chimney which was horrible. We made sure we talked to people in our immediate streets to see how they were. Looking back, would you do anything differently? Not really, no. I did everything that I could do. I think the one thing that pleasantly surprised me was how much work goes on in the community. Especially how many volunteers there are

who keep the wheels turning. We do a lot of work supporting those volunteers and groups, which is just amazing. The community board is so valuable as it allows residents to have a voice with the city council. What is your proudest moment in the job? There are a number of things. Some of the art work in Fendalton Park – it has made the place look good. The skate park in Jellie Park. We put a walkway around Avonhead Park, which I recently walked around and there were heaps of people using it. Parking issues is one of the biggest problems still facing our ward and we have worked hard to come up with solutions. I was proud of getting the post office into the Fendalton centre to keep that facility going. Also, the widening of Fendalton Rd was a good moment for us. There is plenty to be proud of, but there is always more to do. How did you deal with the criticism that goes along with being an elected member? It depends on how personal people got. All of us can cope when debate is about the issue. Have you ever had a moment where you thought, I don’t

want to do this anymore? If I have had those thoughts, they haven’t lasted long. I think it is the nature of the job and you have other things in your life, so you don’t get too down. You have to be able to take a step back and reassess. Your son was on the city council – must be a family thing? Yes, he was on the city council.

Progress in your neighbourhood • Fixing the Northern Relief, one of Christchurch’s biggest wastewater pipes running through Fendalton, Merivale and St Albans is more than halfway through and will be completed at the end of the year. • Essential wastewater repairs in Aikmans Road in Merivale are progressing well and will be completed at the end of the year. • Ongoing repairs to the wastewater networks in Fendalton, Strowan, Papanui and Bryndwr are due to finish at the end of September. • The historic Helmore’s Lane Bridge was reopened to pedestrians and cyclists on 5 September after major rebuilding. SCHOOLS St Albans Catholic School year 5 and 6 pupils enjoyed a visit from three Canterbury Kings cricket players. They led a cricket session and taught the children how to play 3bats, a modified cricket game. Principal Annette Sjoberg said it was a great way to get the pupils excited. “We are ready for the summer sporting season,” she said.

Marshland School pupils took to the slopes last week during their annual Mt Hutt skiing trip. Teacher Carolyn Davies said the “great” forecast for the trip got it off to a fantastic start. “For some, it was their first time up the mountain. The day went smoothly as the organisation from Mt Hutt’s administration and ski instructors was outstanding . . . our pupils did not stop smiling and have had, in their own words, the best day of the year,” she said.

The South Island schools tournament took place over four days at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre. CBHS faced some familiar opposition on their way to the title, defeating Cashmere High School 94-75 in the semi-final. Jack Lang proved the difference hitting eight three pointers in the semi-final victory. The tournament win means that CBHS have booked a spot in the national tournament, which will be played in Palmerston North at the end of the month. Second XI bring home national hockey title

RANGI RURU’S second XI hockey team has won the Chris Arthur Cup in Hamilton. They beat local rival St Margaret’s College 4-0 in the national hockey tournament. Assistant coach Amy McKerchar said the team’s sense of self belief was key to their success. “The girls were determined they could improve on their placing from last year. And improve they certainly did,” she said. “They are a true team of champions and an absolute pleasure to work with.” The first pool game against Westlake Girls High School showed the girls were wellprepared, securing a 6-1 win. The second game against Queen Margaret College did much to strengthen the resolve of the group as they roared home with a massive 19-0 win. The team’s only loss of the tournament was against another local team, Christchurch Girls’ High School, going down 2-0. Rangi Ruru wins Jane Sullivan Trophy RANGI RURU Girls’ School has won an equestrian trophy named after a former student. The school’s gold team battled wet and windy conditions recently to beat 22 other Canterbury teams and win the Jane Sullivan Trophy. The event was held in the National Equestrian Centre at McLeans Island. Rangi Ruru’s blue team placed a close forth. The school’s director of equestrian Pippa Young said it was the first time Rangi Ruru had won the trophy since 2004. “Jane Sullivan is a former

SENIOR PRODUCTION Our Senior Production was an adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Held over three nights in The Aurora Centre the visually stunning production captivated young and old alike.

RUGBY The 1st XV Rugby team won the South Island co-ed final against South Otago High School which was played in Balclutha. This is the first time the 1st XV have won this South Island title. This meant the team qualified for the National co-ed finals weekend held at the Sport and Rugby Institute in Palmerston North. The first game the team played Aorere College - final score 13-32 to Aorere. The second game was against St Peters College - final score 37-10 to St Peters.

BIG SING The Annual New Zealand Choral Federation Big Sing was held in Dunedin over three days in August. Senior Chorale and Bel Canto both received Gold Awards. This places both of them within the top five choirs in New Zealand.

This year’s Cantamath competition was held on 24th August at Horncastle Arena. Up to fifty teams competed in this annual event and what a great night for Burnside Maths! We won the Year 9 and Year 10 award - the first time we have held both titles in five years. A special mention to the Year 13s who have been helping Mrs Risbridger to run Year 9 training sessions at lunchtimes all year: Hamish Gunasekara, Paddy Cheah, Zach Withers and Jess Dunn. Inga Currey, owner and operator of Christchurch Icelandic Horse Treks, is using them in her business. There are other owners, and breeders, of icelandic horses around Christchurch, Rangiora, Oxford, Waikuku, Ashburton, Oamaru and Twizel. “The first sort of bigger breeder was in Oamaru, the stud was called Vindholar Southern Icelandics, they were the pioneers here. There is a breeder in Ashburton,” she said. She said three of her clients in Christchurch had bought icelandic horses, and two of them have bred their first foal. “For the last two years we have

Mrs Currey, originally from just south of Frankfurt, Germany, has lived in New Zealand since moving here with her Kiwi husband in 2000. She has ridden icelandic horses since she was 18. “They were brought into Iceland by the Vikings, over 1000 years ago. They have been purebred there since then. No icelandic horse that leaves Iceland can ever go back and no other horses can be imported either,” she said. Her trekking business stems

from her passion for the breed and being conveniently located near Spencer Park Beach. “I collected horses for the family, who then weren’t interested … I had the horses and I had the location. You couldn’t ride icelandic horses anywhere here yet, that’s why I had the idea.” Mrs Currey said one of her favourite traits of icelandic horses was “definitely the tölt.” “When people experience the tölt for the first time, their expressions and the things they say are lovely to see,” she said. The tölt is a unique gait al-

lowing the horse to move in a similar fashion to walking, but at a running speed. This makes for a very smooth ride. Jennie Boerema, president of the Icelandic Horses New Zealand association, explained riding with a full glass of beer has been used to demonstrate how smooth the tölt can be. “[During] the beer tölt, we have a glass of beer in hand and we use a wooden plank to ride over so you can hear the hoof beats. You can just sit still and drink your beer while riding. We thought that was very conveni-

ent, especially in New Zealand where you love your beer,” she said. Mrs Boerema said icelandic horses were well suited to the terrain of the south. “If you look at the terrain, especially of the south, it is very easy for the icelandic horse to fit in. It’s similar to Iceland,” she said.

HYDRATE TO ELEVATE We all know drinking water is important, but the majority of us simply don’t drink enough even though we know it makes us feel great when we do. We look at the benefits and motivate you to drink more with a few tips on how to make it just a little more palatable.

ith over a quarter of Kiwis consuming less than two glasses of water a day and only 5% drinking more than the recommended eight, the message obviously hasn’t hit home on the importance of hydrating our body. A recent survey conducted by SodaStream found that Cantabrians are particularly guilty when it comes to their water intake. With 82% drinking less than six glasses of water a day, but with over 85% admitting they feel healthier when they drink more water, something needs to be done to bridge the gap in terms of what we know to be true and what we’re actually doing about it. This same survey revealed that although 41% of us limit how many soft drinks we consume due to our concerns over sugar content, the same number of people said tea or coffee is this their

number one drink of choice. Some people even believe that the water consumed in their cup of Joe constitutes part of their water intake. This is a fallacy. As caffeine actually dehydrates us, as does alcohol too, it means we need to drink even more water to compensate. Not so surprisingly the reason we don’t drink nearly enough water is that we simply forget. Now with apps you can download direct to your smart phone, there are no more excuses. Further studies proved that people who had a SodaStream machine in their homes were more likely to drink more water. In fact, the study showed that people drank 30% more water. For those of us who aren’t used to drinking water like it’s going out of fashion, there are plenty of ways to increase the fun factor while still being healthy.

Joint pain: Do I have arthritis or could it be mainly my muscles? PhysiotheraPist ietje van stolk suggests that a major part of the pain could be due to muscle pain rather than simply arthritis. “even if an x-ray shows arthritis, the reason for the pain may be the muscles around the joint,” she explains. The images show how a muscle knot (the crosses) in a back muscle can give hip pain (aches and pain are the red areas in the drawings), a knot in a muscle on the back of the shoulder blade can give a deep pain in the front of the shoulder and a muscle knot all the way near the groin can give an ache in the knee (especially at night in bed). ietje recalls one case where an 89 year old client with severe arthritis who walked with a stick, told her, “i will end up in a wheelchair, i cannot put any weight through my right leg due to pain in my hip and buttock”. “Within 4 treatments, she was walking with her stick but without the severe pain,” says ietje. “The arthritis was one of the factors that made her muscles spasm but

the other was that older people move less and the flexed position the hip is in when we sit is particularly bad for the hip.” ietje is happy with the fact that although the client was 89 and could have been “given up on” or told to live with the pain, she made a difference to her health and wellbeing.
